TESOROS DE COLOMBIA

About us

Tesoros de Colombia Sustainable Farm is a private company created by conservationists in Bogota, Colombia. We are aimed at conserving endemic Colombian species through sustainable bio commerce, habitat protection and education.

Until now, smugglers have filled the demand for Colombian frogs by removing animals from the wild without permission or oversight. Along with habitat destruction, this has a negative effect on wild frog populations. There is worldwide interest in the fauna and flora of Colombia for zoological institutions, research facilities and private hobbyists and Colombia wants to develop sustainable bio commerce programs. A way to satisfy both of these is to breed wild species and sell the resulting offspring to the international market. That is part of what Tesoros de Colombia is trying to do.

We have created a unique facility designed and equipped to breed several species of Colombian butterflies and frogs. Our breeding facility proudly operates with the highest standard of animal welfare, and with the help of our international partners, we make sure this standard is maintained until each animal arrives at its final destination.

Along with our captive breeding facility, we are restoring several hectares of natural habitat, and have an active community outreach program educating the public about local conservation.

This project represents more than a decade of our research into the biology, husbandry and welfare of the species involved.  We have made monumental efforts to obtain several export permits from the Colombian authorities. Eight years of permanent work and money have been invested, and yet the work is not done. Unprecedented progress has been made, but there is more to do.

With your help we hope to continue to offer the world “treasures of Colombia”.
Tesoros de Colombia Needs You

Legally exporting frogs out of Colombia has never been done before.

This project has taken much more money, time and effort than we anticipated. We have spent the last eight years working with the Colombian government to obtain export permits for several butterfly and dart frog species. Some permits have been obtained, but the available funds to finish the permit process are inadequate. Your contribution will help us pass this hurdle so that we can begin to legally export all of the Colombian species we are working with.

The Impact

Our intention with this project is to offer healthy, legal, captive bred animals to fill the demand of the international market. This program has broken new ground by obtaining export permits for these frogs. It is our sincere hope that the availability of these captive raised, high quality, Colombian animals will reduce the effects of illegal harvest. Coupled with habitat protection and local education, we hope to make a genuine and positive impact on the future of Colombian wildlife.
Why Colombia?

We feel very fortunate to work protecting wildlife in this fascinating and mega-diverse country. Colombia is one of the most bio-diverse countries on the planet, home to about 10% of the world’s animal species and about 15% of the world's amphibians. Many of these species are endemic, meaning they occur only in Colombia. This high bio-diversity is a product of Colombia's varied climate and diverse habitats.  It’s location at the meeting of Central and South America creates an area unlike any other in the world. Colombia has habitats that include shores on two oceans, high Andes mountain peaks, tropical rainforests, flat alluvial plains and countless intergrades between them.

Why Tesoros de Colombia?

Colombian wildlife, as well as in other countries, faces diverse threats. One particular animal group that we feel very strongly for are the Poison Dart Frogs. These animals are facing two very real threats: illegal collection for the pet trade and habitat destruction. We decided to start Tesoros de Colombia to address both problems at once. Our captive bred frogs can greatly reduce smuggling pressure on wild populations. Money raised through the sale of the frogs will be used to protect and restore Colombian forests and promote conservation through educational programs. In this way we are able to both protect wild frogs from smuggling and ensure that a portion of their natural habitat is restored and not developed.

Tesoros de Colombia currently owns and protects several hectares of natural habitat benefitting a wide variety of wildlife. The land was purchased in 2006 and was previously used as pastureland and sugarcane fields. Since then, Tesoros de Colombia has been working on an intense forest restoration project to bring back the diversity that this land once had. Over 160 species of vertebrates can be found in our forest.

Your contributions will help ease the demand for illegally collected frogs and help us to protect a piece of Colombian habitat.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't contribute financially, you can still help us by spreading the word about us. Please share this campaign with all your friends and family.  Use the Indigogo share tools to talk about this via e-mail and all of your favorite social media sites.

How We Got Started

In 2006  a group of conservationist got together and decided to enact a plan to protect Colombian animals and habitat. We purchased land that was previously dedicated to sugarcane and cow pastures and began a reforestation program.

Between 2006 and 2008, after a long legal process we managed to get the environmental license for the project and the experimental permit for Dendrobates truncatus and 32 species of butterflies.

Between 2008 and 2009 we got the building license and built  an environmentally friendly breeding facility.

In 2010 we got the parents for both butterflies and D. truncatus.

In 2011 we finally convinced the environmental authority to allow experimental permits for the other 6 species. We then had to start getting the permits from other regional authorities

In November 2011 we finally made the first ever export of legal poison frogs from
Colombia after six years of hard work.

Where We Are Now

We have the facility built and are breeding these animals. Some are doing so well they have created successive generations. We have had to limit the amount of breeding taking place to allow the permit process to unfold.

In the past 30 years almost 10 previous projects were unsuccessful obtaining permits to export poison frogs . We succeeded and acquired the permits required to export some of our captive bred frogs. We can now offer multiple species of captive born offspring to Zoos, Universities and hobbyists. Unfortunately these permits came at a time when global economic conditions were not favorable for such a project. The original species we were given permission to export are not in high demand. Expanding our permits will go a long way towards generating income, but the funds for the permits have dried up.

We need your help to get past this hurdle. Your donations will allow us to continue obtaining new export permits that will expand our offerings and help this project grow.

Tesoros de Colombia has accomplished many things, but there is still a long way to go.
The Future of Tesoros de Colombia

There are more permits to be obtained and many good things to come. We are
just beginning to see what is possible. It is time to start doing what we set out to do. We want to create a new environmentally conscious business, that will benefit the frogs, the habitat and ourselves while serving as a model for similar conservation efforts around the world. Legal trade lines can reduce smuggling by offering an attractive alternative.

Maintaining the facility and restoring a forest costs money that we simply don't have right now. We need funding so that we may make it through this critical time. Once we begin to receive income from exported frogs we can begin to pay back many of our original loans that have made this all possible. We will also be able to purchase and protect new land in different habitats. However, if we are forced to shut our doors before those imports begin to generate income, then this dream may be lost forever.

The Bottom Line

By supporting Tesoros de Colombia you are doing something different. Unlike other environmental projects, our goal is to be self reliant. With your help we hope to pass this hurdle and be able to protect our frogs and forest into the foreseeable future.

                      Thank you for your support.
